In describing memory for skilled activity, Ericsson & Kintsch argue that the end products of processing can be stored in long term memory and accessed through retrieval cues in short term memory. It is not, however, obvi-ous that principles of expert memory derived from the "cognitive processes occur as a sequence of stable states representing end products of processing, and that acquired memory skills allow these end products to be stored in LTM" (Ericsson & Kintsch, 1995) Ericsson and Kintsch were able to apply this theory across numerous domains including medical diagnosis and mental calculation. Ericsson and Kintsch (1995, p. 237) are very clear about chess experts’ ability to store information from random positions: “skilled chess players are able to encode and store the locations of individual chess pieces of a chess position in the absence of meaningful configurations of chess pieces.” The latter were attributed to the acquisition of task-specific skills and strategies by the experts (in the sense of Ericsson and Kintsch 1995), a finding corroborated by means of retrospective verbal data. This article reports the results of a mixed-method investigation of high-level discourse processes in simultaneous interpreting.
