The ÄSCHER guesthouse on Ebenalp in Alpstein has been among our favourite mountain restaurants ever since we moved to Switzerland. Located 1470 masl. on a plateau, built directly on the mountain – yes, the mountain is partly a wall of the building; the guesthouse has been here since 1884, making it one of the oldest of its kind in Switzerland.

Only the paragliders, like neon jellyfish, tag your world as 21st century. Those hermit monks may be long gone, but I can't think of a better place to commune with nature while immersed in traditional Swiss alpine culture than in a mountain … Take the Ebenalpbahn from Wasserauen to the mountain station and then it’s a 15 minute walk to the Aescher through the Wildkirch caves. Alternatively it’s a 2h 30min hike from Wasserauen via Seealpsee to the Aescher.
