For English Language I view the following as the essential ‘threshold concepts‘: phonic decoding and vocabulary decoding (largely focused in Primary study, but not exclusively); recognition of sentence structures and a conscious manipulation of such structures for effect; generic writing structures; a recognition and application of complex patterns of language, imagery and plot. "Naming What We Know examines the core principles of knowledge in the discipline of writing studies using the lens of "threshold concepts"--Concepts that are critical for epistemological participation in a discipline. The first part of the book defines and describes thirty-seven threshold concepts of the discipline in entries written by some of the field's most active researchers and teachers This threshold concept interested me because I’ve always thought of writing/language as performative, but when you start to complicate the definition of writing, the performance changes. There was no mention of genre writing in this piece, but an effective writer and rhetor already sees the value of writing in genre and the power certain rhetorical moves have.
